4A- Forming An Opportunity Belief

Kalie Novosedliak
Professor Pryor
ENT3003- Assignment 4A
30 January 2020

  1. I believe that there is an opportunity in the scooter parking system on UF campus.
  2. The unmet need of this problem is the inadequate scooter parking space spread throughout UF campus in order to accommodate everyone. Students and staff members of UF who own scooters and need to park on campus have this unmet need. I believe this need has evolved over time with the rapid increase of students and faculty present on campus, so this need is relatively new and has not always existed. In order to meet this need, students and staff have to either wait for someone to leave in order to take their spot, find a way to squeeze their scooter in small spaces if possible, or if they do not have enough time(in order to make it to class or work on time) to find proper scooter parking, they often times park their scooter against UF parking regulations and get a ticket.
  3. (A)Student-Athlete at UF
  4. (A)The first prototypical customer is interviewed is one of my teammates, Celi Guzman. She said the exact nature of the need is to park her scooter closest to wherever she has class, by the pool, or by Hawkins Academic Advising Center for student-athletes. She continuously stressed how difficult it is to find immediate parking at these specific places, especially during the week and school hours simply due to the lack of enough space provided for scooter parking. Celi also believes she is most aware of this unmet need during the week days when she is on campus because it is the most crowded with students all trying to park in one limited spot in order to go anywhere on campus. Because her class times range from 9:35a.m.-5p.m., Celi is on campus for most of the day and has noticed scooter parking is hardest to find in the morning until 1-2p.m., but parking is much more available towards the evening. She told me she has only had this need for a semester and a half solely because that is exactly how long she has owned a scooter for. Celi also said she immediately noticed this unmet need at the beginning of the Fall 2019 semester, directly correlating to when she initially got a scooter. She currently addresses this need by making sure she gives herself enough time before class to find scooter parking, expecting that she will have to wait for someone to leave in order to take their spot. Celi is not at all satisfied with this solution and believes that a true solution to fix this unmet need and problem would be to create more scooter parking throughout campus.
3. (B) UF Swim and Dive Athletic Trainer
4.(B)Jon is an athletic trainer that works here at UF and drives a scooter. He mostly parks at the pool, and by the stadium in order to help his athletes. Jon also stressed to me the unmet need of not enough scooter parking on campus and how it affects his schedule throughout the day. Jon says he experiences this need all day, every day of the week that he works on campus. The places where he needs to park are always crowded because the scooter parking for these specific destinations are especially limited and usually taken up by athletes’ scooters. Like Celi, Jon also experienced this unmet need immediately after getting a scooter, on the first time trying to park it on campus. Currently, in order to satisfy this unmet need, Jon often walks between the SEZ Athletic Training room and the training room in the O’connell Center Training Room rather that driving this scooter back and forth, knowing how hard it will be to find parking at each of these places. Jon is unsatisfied with this unmet need because it is a lot more time consuming and physically taxing having to walk back and forth between both training rooms. Jon thinks it is a great idea to encourage UF to create additional scooter parking on campus.

3.(C) Student at UF and in Kappa Delta Sorority
4.(C) Emily McFarlane is a student at UF and also a member of the Kappa Delta Sorority. I chose to interview Emily about the unmet need of scooter parking around campus because she has very different destinations to park at throughout her day in comparison to Celi and Jon. However, likewise to Celi and Jon, Emily also experiences problems with the lack of scooter parking around campus and even at her sorority on campus. She finds this unmet need is always present, even during the evening when her sorority gets together for dinners and meetings. Emily said she has had this problem all two year that she’s had a scooter and attended UF. She first became aware of this need the first time she needed to park her scooter at her first class freshman year because there was no scooter parking available at that time. Emily currently addresses this problem by taking the bus around campus rather than having to drive and re-park her scooter and different locations. She is not satisfied with this solution because her schedule does not often times match up with the bus schedule, making it inconvenient and less time efficient for her everyday tasks.

  1. (A,B, and C) I learned that this opportunity is very important to the majority of students and staff here on campus. This unmet need is a problem for most of those who have a scooter and need to park them on campus on a regular day to day basis. I was surprised to hear the different ways people address this unmet need and how drastically it affects their schedule throughout the day. For Celi, as a student-athlete she has very limited spare time to begin with, so hearing that she has to dedicate extra time solely in order to find scooter parking for where she needs to go is really inconvenient for her and the limited free-time she has to begin with between school and swim. For Jon, I am especially surprised that there isn't a dedicated scooter parking for staff member to make it easier for them to commute throughout campus if needed. This seems like something that would dramatically increase the amount of time he is able to spend helping athletes rather than spending time having to walk back and forth between training rooms. And lastly, from Emily’s interview I was really surprised that her alternative way of transportation is the bus. Many times students buy a scooter to prevent from having to use the bus and being able to come and go to different places whenever you want to, but understanding that Emily still has to use the bus even after buying a scooter only because it is so difficult to find scooter parking is very unreasonable.

7. The whole of my original opportunity is still there and perhaps enhanced. After interviewing three different prototypical customers, my new opportunity is more accurate and encourages me to believe this unmet need is at a much larger scale and affects most people on campus. I believe entrepreneurs should most definitely adapt their opportunities based on the customers’ feedback because the solution is to help those specific customers. Staying firm and creating a solution that doesn’t completely solve the problem customers are facing would be a waste of time and effort. I believe making the customers’ feedback when trying to create a solution to an unmet need should be a priority to an entrepreneur.

My best friend's dad and his two other brothers own their own coffee shop that is really popular in my hometown, San Diego, California. Their coffee shop is named Ryan Bros Coffee and they have four locations throughout the San Diego area that are all really successful. A majority of their coffee is actually on tap, making it a much more efficient way of business to prevent from backed up orders and long lines. I thought this was a very creative idea and it's amazing to see that their coffee is amazing even on tap! I often go in to their coffee shop to say hi, help out if needed and of course, because I get free coffee! I've talked with her dad, one of the owners about how exactly they started their business from nothing to becoming one of the most popular destinations for coffee! The first thing he told me was how important the financial piece is in order to start up a business. Luckily, him and his two other brothers collectively contributed to the finances for their business to get a kick start. As an entrepreneur, he also told me that it is a lot of work to keep up with every aspect of the coffee shop, with management, finances, and making sure everything is going smooth within all four locations. I admire how successful him and his brothers are and how hard they work in order to maintain their success and the quality of not only their coffee, but the experience as a whole when going to Ryan Bros. Mr. Ryan is very passionate about his job as an entrepreneur which I believe is one of the most important qualities an entrepreneur needs to possess in order to be just as successful.

I enrolled in ENT3003 because it is required for my Business major, but I am truly interested in learning about the different aspects of entrepreneurship. I admire those who are creative and passionate enough to start their own business or propose new ideas such as Mr. Ryan. I think it would be really cool to have my own business, however I think the skills I learn in this course will be helpful in any career I decide to take on in my future. I am glad this course is required because I think there are some really important skills of entrepreneurship that I can learn about in order to make myself a better employee, boss, owner, or person in general!

2A- Bug List

Kalie Novosedliak
Professor Pryor
ENT 3003, 2A- Bug List
21 January 2020

1. During school hours, scooter parking is always crowded, making it hard to easily find a spot to park in before class.
Why? There is not enough scooter parking on campus.
2. When my clothes are in the wash, the water pressure is really low everywhere else in my apartment.
Why? The majority of the water is being used for the washing machine cycle, making it difficult for water to reach other places like the shower or sink.
3. I am always really cold in the morning when I wake up during the winter.
Why? The heat is not on high enough in my apartment.
4. There are no school-busses in San Diego, my home town, that pick kids up from their neighborhoods or houses to go to school in the morning.
Why? Most schools do not have adequate funds in order to do so.
5. From 5-7pm, the rush hour traffic is really backed up by Lake Alice on my way home from swim practice.
Why? There are not enough lanes in that area to keep traffic moving.
6. I can't drive my car to practice in the morning even when it's really cold.
Why? Because there is no free parking on campus, a decal is required in order to park anywhere on campus if parking has not been lifted.
7. It is a 5-10 min walk from the closest scooter parking lot to one of my classes on campus.
Why? There are not enough scooter parking lots that are close to some buildings on campus.
8. My phone dies really quickly.
Why? Because it is an older version of the iPhone, so the battery life is shorter.
9. I have to rush from practice some days in order to make it to class on time.
Why? Sometimes practice will run late, or our coaches will keep us for longer than 3 hours.
10. I have a lot of homework to do over the weekends.
Why? Between practice and class, I do not have a lot of free time to get everything do throughout the week days.
11. There are long lines at the restaurants on campus during lunch hours.
Why? There are not enough options on campus or there are not enough divided lines at the restaurants in order to make the service more efficient.
12. The wifi in my apartment is really slow, especially when trying to watch lectures or videos.
Why? There are too many devices using the wifi at one time.
13. My backpack starts to hurt my shoulders after wearing it for too long.
Why? It is too heavy and stuffed with books, my laptop, food, and textbooks.
14. I can never find water fountains on campus to fill up my hydro flask.
Why? There aren't enough water dispensers around campus.
15. In one of my lecture classes, I can't hear everything the professor says.
Why? She doesn't use a microphone so her voice doesn't echo throughout the room to hear her clearly.
16. I find it hard to get ahead on my school work.
Why? My week is too busy with classes, meetings and swim practice in order to get ahead, so I end up doing most of my homework for that week during the weekend.
17. My laptop dies quickly during the day when I do not have time to charge it.
Why? I forget to charge it in between classes or at night when I'm home.
18. Some nights it's hard to sleep.
Why? Because my neighbors are loud and the walls in my apartment are relatively thin.
19. I am unable to attend lecture classes for this class.
Why? My swim practice time interferes with my Entrepreneurship lecture time.
20. The indoor pool is always really cold during practice, making it harder to go fast.
Why? It is difficult to regulate the pool temperature at all times because there is only one employee who has control over that.

Reflection:
I found this assignment to be particularly challenging simply because I had to think really hard over the span of a few days in order to come up with 20 bugs. It required me to try to pull from my memory and to think "What has annoyed my in the past recently that would work in this assignment as a "bug" and its reasoning for being a 'bug'?". While completing this assignment I also felt like I was being very negative and constantly complaining about third-world problems I would consider as "bugs" that occur throughout my day. Even after something small happened that I considered a "bug" I immediately had to write it down in my phone in order to memorize each one, so I would definitely consider the memorization aspect of this assignment to be a challenge as well. However, I found the "why" part of this assignment to be relatively easy because most of the answers were straight forward and a step I would need to consider in order to get to the root of that specific problem.
