What Drives Entrepreneurs, and What Drives You?

This semester went by so fast and I think ENT3003 is one of my favorite if not my favorite classes I took this spring! I realized you learn a lot about yourself in this class and think about some things I never thought of before! I never really considered myself as the creative type because I have much more of a mathematical working brain but this class really pushed my limits and forced me to be creative and think outside the box.

Having to create my own business concept and decide what I would want to do as an entrepreneur is the best experience I had in this class and something I will remember for a long time. I'm proud of finding different ways to make my business concept fit into the assignments because it is much different than coming up with a straight forward and simple product. This forced be to think more in order to make sure my organization would be successful and meaningful.

I definitely think I have gained an entrepreneurial mindset from this course and gave me a whole different perspective on all of the elements and aspects that go into having your own business and how hard it actually is to be successful in this type of environment. I liked reading biographies about famous entrepreneurs and realizing how hard they had it before ever becoming successful. I would definitely say I think like an entrepreneur and emphasize the importance of hard work and not giving up on your ideas.

For future students of this course I would definitely say be creative and put effort into every assignment in order to get the most out of this class. This class is very hands on and I like that Professor Pryor allows you to kind of create your own schedule and format of when and how you do these assignments. Being creative and thinking outside of the box is important in this class in order to learn as much as I did.

29A- Venture Concept No.2

ENT3003- Assignment 29A

1)
Opportunity:

It has become increasingly common in not only the US educational system, but our global educational system, that many public schools throughout are not given adequate funding in order to provide resources necessary for it students and staff. In our continuously evolving society, education has become more and more important and believed to provide the most stable future and set an individual up for a successful career. Today, it is more common to attend school and get an education, whether it be at the elementary, middle, high school, or collegiate level. Regardless, our society encourages the importance of getting an education especially for younger generations in order to ensure that they will be set up for success.

But how do we know that this will happen if so many public schools don't have the resources to do so? It is our job to ensure that our students who choose to get an education for the better of their future have the adequate resources in order to make their learning experience the best it can possibly be. Technology is something that is constantly being implemented in our schools teaching styles, however lacking technology is so common throughout these poorly funded public schools, which is what creates such opportunity in this environment. As a college student myself, I can verify that technology is necessary in all of my classes as the curriculum is mostly online through the Canvas platform. Many of my classes are also hybrid or completely online meaning it's crucial to have a computer of any kind in order to even take the class and get access to the lessons. I could not imagine not having the resources necessary to be successful. However to compensate, students and teachers around the US specifically have been forced to share available resources, which does not provide the more efficient and effective way of learning.

For example, with a limited amount of computers readily available to the students, switching off usage and having to create a list of who can use it and for how long has been a way of satisfying this need. However, limiting students in their time to use the technology which is crucial in lessons can only hurt their education. Especially in today's society where we have become so dependent on using technology, learning how to correctly use technology is important not only at the academic level, but socially as well. My organization targets to help students around the US that have are dealing with these issues, and my segment includes adults of any age that feel passionate in helping this unmet need. Although this big opportunity will last for a long time until completely solved, I believe this mission is urgent and it is the Equal Education Opportunity Organization's effort that will help to create a more equal educational system throughout the US.

Innovation:

My innovative service is called the Equal Education Opportunity Organization. It is a non-profit organization that strives to help the unmet need of having adequate resources in order to help students and teachers learn to their fullest potential. Its sole purpose is to provide aids for this specific issue as we understand the importance of creating equal educational opportunity for all students through an equal educational system. Setting up students for successful futures is our ultimate goal. In order to do so, we will hope fundraising events first locally, and hopefully expand nationally and even globally, to help public schools that do not have the luxury other schools may have due to a lack of funding. At these fundraising events, people will be able to make money donations or technology donations. We will take any unwanted technology people may have sitting around their houses or offices that are not being used and put them to good use in these schools. It is a great way of recycling technology and allowing these public schools to fully enjoy and utilize them through lessons being taught in class.

Technology has become such a huge aspect of our society today, and schools have increased the incorporation of technological devices used in order to aid the learning experience for students. This is the goal we are pursuing for public schools that do not necessarily have those luxuries. However, dedicating the fundraisers of both money donations and technology donations will make a huge difference for these students. Once these people donate, we will ask for their email or phone number and contact them with pictures of students that benefited from their donations so they can directly see how they changed a life. This makes our organization much more intimate than others in the market.

Venture Concept:

People will invest in this organization because of its good intentions and passion behind making a difference for not only the student's futures, but our society's future as well. They may be making a switch from making donations to another organization to ours, or simply adding our organization onto their list as a cause they would like to donate to. I do not believe this would be a very difficult decision to make especially because my customers are most likely already willing to help an issue either similar to ours or completely different. Also, I believe their willingness to help a new organization and help spread awareness to the issue we are addressing is their goal as well. My competitors may be considered to be other organizations that target to help this specific issue.

Although our overall goal is to aid those in need of help and realizing that these similar organizations are doing so, the amount of donations they receive can negatively affect ours, which is the sole reason as to why they are competitors. In a way, we are all working together rather than competing. Our business location plays a huge role in our potential success, we will target to expand from locally to nationally, however we will target more densely populated cities in order to give as many people as possible an opportunity to donate if they wish. In order to ensure that our organization and service will last with efficiency and effectiveness, we will need a lot of employees involved to help this organization expand to the extent we want it to. We will set values for our employees to keep in mind with everything they do in regards to the organization. These will be instilled in our employees actions and decisions. Staying organized and maintaining adaptability is very important for our organization in that we will not necessarily all be in one factory building together at one time. Trust is something these employees will need to respect due to my lack of ability to micromanage the organization at all times.

Three minor elements:

The most important resources I have are networking and adaptability. Firstly, it is crucial as a new organization to be able to network with other similar companies/organizations/individuals who have experience in this particular market. This will not only help by advice, but they could also potentially support our organization by a way of advertising for us in our initial stage of starting up. Our adaptability should be something unparalleled by other organizations, which is something that will set us apart from other competitors. We will make sure to be able to adapt to any changes in the market, socially, etc. and will prevent from letting those changes hold us back as an organization and potentially try to use these changes t o our advantages even. Next with my current venture, I want to be able to develop an app connected to our organization that people can download and stay in touch with any news or updates we have. On this app, people will be able to make accounts and individualize their profile. They can make monetary donations through this app and I think it would be a good idea to encourage donations through a competition between account members and reward the winner who donated the most to receive some type of reward, whether it be earning a trip to be able to meet some students who benefit from their donations, etc. Also, I want to be able to upload pictures and videos of students who benefit from these donations and direct them to those who donated. This would make our organization much more intimate and make our donors feel much more involved and in touch with where exactly their donations are going and allow them to first hand see how they are helping someones life. If I launched, five years after I would want to see my organization expanding from state to state to become a national organization. I ultimately just want to expand my organization as much as possible in order to spread awareness of this issue and help as many students around the US as possible, which is my vision and mission as an entrepreneur.

2) I got super positive feedback from Danielle and Cameron on my last Venture Concept. They both explained that they were able to understand my business concept and lot better from this assignment. Danielle also said that her mom is a teacher and experiences some of these hardships first hand, which is so cool to see and even emphasizes how common this issue is, much more than we may realize! Cameron also gave great feedback and recommended I break up my paragraphs a little more in order to make the reading much more approachable, so that's something I tried to do in this one. Overall I got really positive feedback on my last venture concept!

3) Based on my positive feedback I didn't want to change too much. Cameron recommended on my last venture concept to break up my paragraphs a little more in order to make them easier to read. That is something I wanted to make sure I did in my second venture concept, which hopefully helps. I also changed some things here and there and gave a more personal perspective as a college student in order to help give a better understanding of how important this is to me and how I wouldn't be able to be nearly as successful without adequate resources which makes it much more important for me to help others who face that issue.

28A- Exit Strategy

Kalie Novosedliak

ENT3003- Assignment 28A
April 14, 2020

1) I definitely intend to protect my venture as a family business and pass it down to my children.

2) I chose this particular strategy because my venture is to help a good cause. If my organization is successful and continues to help people I want the future generations to continue this passion and see the issue it stands to address. This is an on going problem our educational system faces, so I feel it is important to pass down an organization that changes lives to my family in order to encourage them the importance of helping people.

3) I do not think my exit strategy has had much influence on my venture. My exit strategy did not have an influence on the opportunity I saw because I definitely had this passion prior to thinking about what I would do with the organization in the far future. I do believe my exit strategy had an influence on my venture's growth intentions however in knowing I wanted to keep my organization family oriented for as long as possible, but it did not have an influence on how I planned to acquire resources.

27A- Reading Reflection No.3

Coco Chanel by Lisa Chaney

1) What surprised me the most about this biography was Chaney's ability to actually write a biography solely based off of letters and commentaries from other people. I thought it w really interesting that they were able to speculate Coco Chanel from these outside sources to make a full, in depth biography about her. Something I admire more about Coco Chanel is her ambition and her willingness to work as hard as she needed to in order to get her designs out there. She didn't come from a necessarily stable childhood or background and it is inspiring to see someone as successful as her to work hard to get where her business is today rather than the success being handed to her. Something I least admire about Coco Chanel is her dependency on men. Although I knew this is most likely a result of her upbringing and a lack of a male figure because her father wasn't necessarily involved in her life, I would have admired her much more if she grew to be an independent woman that did not rely on a male. Coco Chanel most definitely experienced challenges and failures with her business, mostly involving a loss of money or lack of bringing money in. She did not let this discourage her and she continued to work harder in order to overcome this challenge.

2) Coco Chanel was very good at finding opportunities to help her business. She paid close attention to current events that could possibly allow her to take advantage of in order to better her business. She was also very good at networking and was good at ensuring people would invest in her business. She was very determined and seemed to go the extra mile in order to get something she knew would help her business.

3) I was confused about the speculation of Coco Chanel being a spy during the war for the Germans. This seems so far out of her character, however knowing her determination I do believe she would do anything it took in order to get her brand name out there so it could definitely be a possibility.

4)
  - What is your relationship with the Germans and were you ever a spy?
  - What is one piece of advice you would give to any individual who wants to follow the same path you did in regards to owning  a business in design?

5) I think Coco Chanel's opinion of hard work is you get out what you put in. Working as hard as possible for your brand or in whatever you do will eventually lead to a success with patience. I think Coco Chanel would encourage how important working hard is especially as an entrepreneur in such a competitive market. She definitely believes her hard work and unwillingness to give up is what made her brand so successful in the end.

26A- Celebrating Failure

ENT3003- Assignment 26A
April 14, 2020

1) Something I continuously failed in this semester was in swim practices or at swim meets. This is actually something I have been struggling in and out of for the past couple of years. I have not been able to perform as well and as consistently as I had in high school so I have experienced a lot of failure with swimming in the past couple of years at UF. This particular failure occurred at my end of season swim meet when I swam the 200 free. Prior to this swim, I had a decent 500 free and although it definitely wasn't close to what I have done before, it still gave me hope that I was moving in a positive direction performance wise, giving me more hope that my 200 free would show positive results too. I remember being nervous for this race because I had subconsciously put more pressure on myself in hopes that my performance would parallel the same results as my 500. However, a big part of swimming and really any other sport is the mentality you are in prior to your race or even during. Because of this pressure I immediately felt tight and stiff after diving in the water, which is a hard physical and mental challenge to overcome especially during a race. I touched the wall and knew it wasn't as good as what I hoped for. My personal best is a 1:49.25 and I went 1:51.81. Although a two second difference seems like the blink of an eye, in swimming its much more than it may seem especially after not dropping any time for a couple of years. This is a time that I would consider a failure both physically and mentally.

2) From this, I was able to take away a lot of information about myself and some things I need to change for the next race. I realized I do the best when I don't put any pressure on myself and just have fun. Psyching myself out seconds before a race will make me over think every movement and distract me from actually swimming the race with full effort put forth. I have trouble with the mental side of swimming and think it is a big factor of why my performance has not been able to be as consistent. I need to focus on myself and control the controllable, being my mindset and the things I do leading up to the race like warm up, what I eat, hydration, etc.

3) I would say I handle failure pretty well. Especially in swim, it is more common than not to fail in either a race or a set you do in practice. However once you have a good race or practice those are what keep you motivated to strive for more. Even the failures are needed in order to improve and learn about what is best for you because every swimmer is different. We all have different routines and figuring out what works best for us is truly through trial and error. I view failure as another opportunity to learn and improve and emotionally although I may be frustrated, I know if I keep giving my all it will eventually pay off when I least expect it. Swimming for me at least is something much bigger than just myself, its a team. So if its especially important for me to stay positive for my teammates and make sure they have a good race even if I don't. This class had definitely taught me to take more risks and be confident in what you do and the risks you take. Some of the most successful people regardless of what it's in are not afraid to take risks and use the trial and error method. This is something I want to gain confidence in and try more of.

25A- What's Next?

Kalie Novosedliak
Professor Pryor
ENT3003- Assignment 25A
April 6, 2020

Existing Market:

Step 1- Next for my venture, I want to develop and app that will make the donor/organization/student relations much more intimate and cohesive. Through this app, we will allow for communication in order for donors to directly be able to see how they helped a student.
Step 2- Two out of the three of my interviewees could not think of something that they would change about the direction I want to take with my organization. They all thought my innovative idea of developing an app would be the next best thing to do once my organization is up and running. However, my third interviewee did suggest that I create a social media account for my organization and creates advertisements on a platform. She suggested that I use Facebook because adults that are in my segment are more likely to use Facebook over Instagram or any other social media platform. I think this is a great way of advertising and getting my organization's name out there because social media has become so widely used.
Step 3- In terms of growing in my existing market, I believe the best thing to do is prioritize advertising and spreading awareness of the issue and getting the organization's name out there. I believe social media is a great and simple way in order to advertise because so many people in today's society have an account on one platform or another. I see many new and smaller companies start up on Instagram or Facebook and grow exponentially from the popularity solely on social media. This is something I want to parallel with my organization and hope for it to grow that easily especially with the issue I am addressing and the severity of it.
However, I believe creating a Facebook page for my organization directly captures the age group of customers I want to target. Because Instagram has a younger audience, I do not think younger adults and children would be willing to help my organization as older adults are from a financial stand point. I think Facebook is a great platform to use in order to capture exactly this and to get the attention needed in order to kick start the popularity of my organization.  This will most definitely help to get my organization's name out there and guide it in growing in my existing market.

New Market:

Step 1- B2C is the radically different market I have chosen
Step 2- I can create value in the B2C market through spreading awareness through a typical B2C companies such as Netflix or McDonald's. I can collaborate with one of these companies in order for them to inform their consumers that a percentage of the amount they are paying those companies for whatever product or service, will be donated to the Equal Education opportunity Organization in order to help students who do not have necessary resources in order to learn properly. I think this will encourage many people in this market and will encourage them to help both the B2C company and my organization as well.
Step 3- Both of my interviewees suggested that I collaborate with a company and offer a deal to customers in the B2C market. This offer may look like a discount for a product of their original B2C company if they donate to my organization. Ultimately this would be a rewarding system for those who choose to donate and help a cause, the reward being a discount to a company in the B2C market.
Step 4- Overall, I learned that this market is very diverse. To be completely honest, I did not know that companies were categorized into certain named markets based on the tactics they use in order to advertise for their certain type of product or service. I learned that the B2C market is very diverse and one of the most popular markets. This particular market includes "every day life" products and services that customers will seek such as Netflix or McDonald's. It surprised me how diverse this market is and how relevant so many companies are to this particular market.
My assumptions for this market were not correct, as I thought this particular market was much more narrow with how it categorized certain companies to be included or not. I also had no idea how popular this market is in regards to companies that are so popular in our society today, in the US at least. Knowing how popular and widely known the companies of this market are, it has brought me to believe this market is more attractive than my own. However, there are different purposes for each one, so it is hard to quantify and measure the attractiveness of each in comparison. Many people have different priorities and that will determine the attractiveness of each market to that particular individual.

23A- Your Ventures Unfair Advantage

Kalie Novosedliak
Professor Pryor
ENT3003- Assignment 23A
April 6, 2020

1) Organization
 a. Why is it valuable?
This is valuable because it ensures that an organization is on task and staying productive in order to parallel a path of success. Staying organized has helped me make sure everything gets done and with quality.
b. Is it rare?
Not everyone is organized to the extent that I am, so yes I would say the level of my organization is rare .
c. Is it imitable?
No, other people can be organized too.
d. Is it non-substitutable?
In terms of my own organization, I do not believe there are other resources that can provide the same benefits other than your own organization. Although there are other resources that can attempt to mirror your own organization, I believe it is a characteristic one must have in order to maintain the benefits.

2) Time management
 a. Why is it valuable?
Time management is valuable because it allows an entrepreneur to make sure everything gets done in a timely manner and in respect of deadlines.
b. Is it rare?
No, having time management is not rare
c. Is it imitable?
No, other people can have good time management too
d. Is it non-substitutable?
I believe this is non-substitutable because time management has specific benefits that other resources may not have. Time management makes sure an organization or entrepreneur is efficient and effective, some core characteristics needed in order to be successful.

3) Positive Attitude
 a. Why is it valuable?
Having a positive attitude is important when trying to stay motivated and to put a consistent effort in a goal. This will ultimately help the organization reach its all time goal because although it is not an easy task, having a good attitude and mindset is very helpful.
b. Is it rare?
No, having a positive attitude is not rare, but there are many people without it.
c. Is it imitable?
No, other people can have a positive attitude too.
d. Is it non-substitutable?
I believe having a positive attitude is non-substitutable because having a negative attitude with other resources in place of a positive attitude will still not show the same benefits. Having a positive attitude when pursuing a goal is important and is something that should not be replaced by another resource regardless of what it is.

4) Consistency
 a. Why is it valuable?
This resource is valuable because it provides stability in an organization when pursuing a goal. One cannot reach a goal without commitment and consistency in the process. Seeing consistent improvement is both encouraging mentally and physically.
b. Is it rare?
Consistency is not rare, however most people do not have experience and knowledge in consistency to the extent that I do. Swimming has taught me a lot about the importance of consistency.
c. Is it imitable?
No, other people can be consistent too.
d. Is it non-substitutable?
I believe this is a non-substitutable resource because of the specific benefits it provides and its long term effect on an organizations success. With consistency, it ensures that an organization is going in the right direction and prevents from any risk occurring that could potentially hurt that organization. The results are the most beneficial and rewarding when being consistent.

5) Visual Learner
 a. Why is it valuable?
This is important in my organization because it allows me to envision what is best for my organization in the long term future. My vision is very clear and is helpful when I need to keep in mind the importance of my efforts in the process of pursuing my goal.
b. Is it rare?
Not everyone is a visual learner so this is not rare
c. Is it imitable?
This is imitable because someone cannot just develop this visual learner characteristic. I believe it is part of someones learning personality.
d. Is it non-substitutable?
My ability to visualize my goals and exactly how I will reach them with my organization has shown that it is non-substitutable and no other resources provide the unique benefits that this does.

6) Accountability
 a. Why is it valuable?
This is valuable because I am easily able to hold myself accountable and responsible for the decisions I make in regards to my organization. It helps me make the best choices for the well being of my organization.
b. Is it rare?
No, other people are accountable too
c. Is it imitable?
No, other people can be accountable too.
d. Is it non-substitutable?
This is non-substitute because no other resource or robot other than "responsible" can match the benefits of this resource. It is something that enforces the importance of making the right decisions and keeping the well being of the company in mind at all times.

7) Hands On experience
 a. Why is it valuable?
This is valuable because experience in a field prior to pursuing an entrepreneurial career in it is important, for me at least. I believe being able to see the works and how the process is develops first hand through hands on experience is really valuable.
b. Is it rare?
No, other people can work in my organization hands on too
c. Is it imitable?
No, other people can have similar hands on experience to me
d. Is it non-substitutable?
This is non-substitutable because someone who does not have this experience but a plethora of other resources still may not have the in depth understanding of the behind-the-scenes that goes into my organization. Being engaged and involved in my organization and the process itself is crucial to me.

 8) Investing $2,000 in start up for organization
 a. Why is it valuable?
This is valuable and necessary in the start up for my organization to take care of basic things in order to get the ball rolling
b. Is it rare?
No, a lot of people have $2,000
c. Is it imitable?
No, anyone can get $2,000
d. Is it non-substitutable?
Yes this is non-substitutable because money can provide benefits and get things for my organization that other resources cannot.

9) Networking
 a. Why is it valuable?
This is valuable because networking can expand the help I can get with my organization such as advertising and advice. This is very important when starting up a business
b. Is it rare?
Yes, this is a rare resource because my market and industry is very narrow and requires a certain type of company/ indivuals with certain experience or jobs that I need to network to.
c. Is it imitable?
Yes, because although some people can network, networking in my specific area is not common and someone cannot easily copy.
d. Is it non-substitutable?
This is non-substituatble because networking with similar companies provides benefits that can determine the success of my organization. No other resources can provide these same benefits that networking can.

10) Adaptability
 a. Why is it valuable?
This is valuable because it is very likely that I will experience adversity with my company and will have to adapt quickly in order to keep my organization successful. Being able to adapt quickly to a changing environment is very important.
b. Is it rare?
This is rare because a lot of entrepreneurs and companies struggle with being able to adapt quickly to a dramatic change in the market or economy as a whole, which is why so many companies that are just starting up fail so easily.
c. Is it imitable?
No, other people can learn how to be adaptable.
d. Is it non-substitutable?
This is non-substitutable because adaptability is the only resource an organization or entrepreneur needs in order to stay successful during a dramatic change in the market. Being able to adapt will prevent the company from being severely affected by a change.

I believe my networking resource is the most important to my organization. This is most important to my venture compared to my other resources because it truly determines the success my organization will see when starting up as a new company. Networking to other similar organizations and communicating with people who are in the market and share similar goals and interests as my organization can dramatically help my organization not only through advertisement, but also in receiving insightful advice that they might have from their own experiences.

2. I wanted to make sure I spoke louder than my last elevator pitch. The feedback I received was very positive and encouraging! This was the main component of my elevator pitch I wanted to improve on.
I thought all of the feedback I got from my second elevator pitch was right on and useful, and most definitely things I can keep in mind for the future!

3. Based on the feedback, I kept a lot of the elevator pitch the same. I spoke a little louder and more clearly which was the biggest change in comparison to my prior elevator pitch. Overall, the content of what I was saying and my hand gesture remained similar, but my speaking voice was what changed.
