14A- Halfway Reflection
Kalie Novosedliak
Professor Pryor
ENT3003, Assignment 14A
27 February 2020
1. In order to be successful in this course thus far and to keep up with the requirements, I most definitely had to maintain good time management and staying organized. Because there are multiple assignments due each week and on top of two lectures, it is important to not procrastinate work. The work in this class is time consuming and although it isn't necessarily vigorous or super difficult, the assignments are though provoking and are not supposed to be rushed. I have to plan each week in regards to setting time aside to watch the lectures and complete all of the assignments that meet the criteria.
2. I have most definitely felt like giving up when watching the lectures. Because they all range around an hour and thirty minutes each, it is sometimes difficult to stay focused the whole time and focus on the lesson. Professor Pryor has quizzes every Monday called "Cupcakes", that ensure you are watching the lectures closely and paying attention to the lesson. This definitely motivates me to not give up and to complete them. Knowing that watching the lectures will directly affect my grade is one thing that pulled me through. I believe I have developed a tenacious attitude from this course over the past two months. I enjoy this class because the assignments require you to think about your answers after considering the lessons of the lectures. The length of completing the assignments and the lectures most definitely contributed to this.
3.
- One tip I would highly suggest considering is fostering the skills of time management and putting 100% in everything you do. In order to get the most out of this class as possible, it is important to stay focused and set enough time aside throughout the week to correctly complete the lectures and assignments. Staying on top of it and getting the work done even when you don't want to is a characteristic of a tenacious mindset every entrepreneur must have in order to be successful.
- Another tip I would give is to not become complacent in this course when it comes to doing the lectures and assignments. Being lazy in the course will not get you anywhere or benefit you whatsoever so be sure to embrace the tenacious mindset and disregard any challenges of complacency throughout the process of this class.
- The last tip I would give is to ask questions if you are confused in regards to the lessons taught in the lectures or the requirements for an assignment. One thing successful entrepreneurs are good at is asking questions and the ability to figure out a way to find an answer. Professor Pryor and Riley Kiefer are both really good at answering questions you may have both in class and via email. Do not let your confusion get in the way of your tenacious mindset and act as a roadblock to your success!

Reflection on Steve Jobs by Walter Isaacson
- What surprised you the most?
I was most surprise to learn that Steve Jobs was using drugs, specifically psychedelics while in college. I know drugs are very common especially more so in the college scene, however I never pictured Jobs to be into that. I more so assumed he would be more closed off, quiet, nerdy, and really focused on his school work.
- What about the entrepreneur did you most admire?
I was most impressed to learn about the passion he had for his vision and the extent Jobs went in order to accomplish some of his biggest goals through Apple. From getting fired from Apple to completely transforming the company and making it exponentially more successful is inspiring and shows that ambition and passion are large aspects of success.
- What about the entrepreneur did you least admire?
Ironically, I least admired the control Jobs wanted to have of his vision, which ultimately made him really hard to work with. I feel that one of the most important characteristics an entrepreneur needs is the ability with work well with others to collaborate in effort to reach for the highest potential for that particular service or product. With this in mind and knowing that Jobs does not exactly fit into that, I least admire his lack of patience in receiving help from others purely because his vision was so set. So in some ways, his strong passion is something that I admire most and also brings out characters that I least admire.
- Did the entrepreneur encounter adversity and failure? If so, what did they do about it?
Yes, Steve Jobs most definitely experienced adversity and failure throughout his career. Although he is a very successful entrepreneur, it is almost impossible for any entrepreneur to not experience failure. Many of his launched products may be considered failures because they did not become as popular as others. The Pixar Image Computer is just one example of a product that Jobs would consider a "failure". From these failures however, Jobs was able to learn and improve from his mistakes which ultimately helped him in the long run, just like most entrepreneurs.
-What competencies did you notice that the entrepreneur exhibited?
One competency that I noticed Steve Jobs obtained was his ability to be innovative with the ideas he came up with. This is what led Jobs to become so successful. The platform he created with Apple, in initiating its own operating system is something that makes his ideas and products so unique from competitors.
- Identify at least one part of the reading that was confusing to you.
I found the reading to be relatively easy and didn't find anything to challenging or confusing. One of the things that I believe would have helped my complete understanding of Jobs is to learn more about his background and life leading up to his successful career. I feel like this is important in understanding an entrepreneur because their background and early life most likely influenced their decisions as an adult and in their career. I also think I would have understood a little better if Isaacson made connections between things of his early life and how exactly they might have impacted his career.
- If you were able to ask two questions to the entrepreneur, what would you ask? Why?
1. What has had the biggest influence on your career in regards to your success? Understanding the most influential part of his success would most definitely inspire other entrepreneurs to become as successful as Jobs is.
2. After all of your experience and knowledge throughout your career, what is one thing you would tell yourself before becoming successful and why? I think reflection on oneself is also very important for self improvement and realizing how far one has come. This is also another tip that would hopefully help other entrepreneurs.
- For fun: What do you think the entrepreneur's opinion was of hard work? Do you share that opinion?
I think Steve Jobs encouraged the importance of hard work in order to become successful, which more definitely overlaps with my own opinion. Nothing comes easy and if it did, everyone would do it. So Jobs most definitely believes that hard work is a crucial characteristic an entrepreneur must have in order to reach a goal.

ENT3003- Assignment 12A
20 February 2020
I chose my segment to target students who attend and staff who work at poorly funded public schools throughout the US, that are directly affected by the lack of adequate resources provided by the school due to financial challenges. Students who fall into this category would be anywhere in public elementary, middle or high school.
In order to find three people that would qualify for my segment to be interviewed, I went to the Gator Swim Club Practice(which is right after my swim practice) in the O'Connell Center. Here I happened to find a lot of students who attend poorly funded middle schools and high schools throughout Gainesville. Two of my interviewees are students at Gainesville High School, one a sophomore and one a senior. They both agreed that there is even a lack of resources at her school in regards to enough available computers in the classrooms or labs. In order to find a solution to this problem they told me that there is a sign up sheet in order to get in line to use the computers. In their google searches related to this problem they always are on the lookout for cheap computers or tablets that they can use in replacement of those at school, but talk with their parents and have trouble affording them. My third interviewee is a middle school student at Fort Clarke Middle School and he said his education was definitely influenced by the lack of resources at his school. He specifically said that there was a lack of paper and printing at the school, so in a lot of the lessons, his teachers were only allowed to make a couple copies of whatever needed to be printed and the class had to share. He said in order to help this problem he would try to take a picture of the paper needed for the lesson and look at it off of his phone, but often times that would lead him to be distracted and go on social media or start texting, so he wasn't completely focused.
I found that all of my interviewees had a lot in common in seeing opportunity in this unmet need that affects their education. Although they dealt with different problems, it all roots from a lack of funding and resources provided to the students and staff.
My interviewees all deal with the effects taken upon their education as a result of this poor funding. They agree that this solution of fundraising and donating would have a hug positive impact on their lives and would help their motivation to learn and work their hardest. They were all definitely aware of the need and believe we need to spread awareness throughout the US of how much this problem could affect their futures.

ENT3003- Assignment 11A

1. YOU:
I am someone who is constantly encouraging people to try their hardest in reaching their fullest potential. I would consider myself a very positive and optimistic person especially when it involves changing lives, specifically in the education system, which related to my concept. I believe this business plays a huge role in my life because I am very passionate about helping in any way I can especially a widespread unmet need such as the education system in our country that affects the lives of so many people.
2. WHAT ARE YOU OFFERING TO CUSTOMERS?
I am offering my customers(students and staff who work for or attend poorly funded public schools) a nonprofit organization that strives to raise money in order to help provide adequate resources in order to improve their learning/teaching experience. Many schools around the US do not have access to technology and standard resources in order to allow teachers to teach and students to learn without any limitations. This organization will hold fundraisers around the US to raise money for this unmet need and will also take in any donations of unwanted technology that can be put to use in these classrooms such as computers, printers, projectors, tablets, etc.
3. WHO ARE YOU OFFERING IT TO?
I am offering this service to students who attend and staff who work for poorly funded public schools around the US that do not have adequate resources in order to allow them to reach their fullest potential. Specifically those at schools who do not have access to standard technology to aid the learning process such as computers, printers, projectors or even standard resources such as paper, pencils, pens, and other necessary resources.
4. WHY DO THEY CARE?
Today, education is so important in order to be successful in one's future. Limiting students' academic potentials due to a lack of resources is a widespread unmet need, but because this is such a crucial aspect of becoming a successful individual of our society, education should constantly be encouraged and one of our top priorities. This service directly determines and affects my customers' future and success.
5. WHAT ARE YOUR CORE COMPETENCIES?
The process in donating or fundraising will be very easy to follow and simple in order to make it an effortless experience. Those who donate will also very followed by updates on how their simple act of kindness affected a certain student or school, so we will have students who benefit from this service send thank you cards to those who made an impact on their lives.
I believe all of these elements work together well in analyzing my business concept in order to assure it will be successful. I have not found that any of these elements are weaker aspects of my business concept solely because this is such a widespread unmet need for our society and the education system can never have too much help. This problem does not only affect my direct customers, but also sets a social and education standard for everyone else outside of the boundary, so it should be a collective effort in aiding this problem.

WHO: Although this is a widespread and in depth unmet need globally, I was still able to find five people who do not have this unmet need. All of my interviewees are however aware of this unmet need in a lack of enough education funding for public schools in order to provide students with adequate learning opportunities and resources. My first interviewee is my academic adviser for the athletic department here at UF. Although he doesn't directly have this unmet need, he believes that there is an imbalance between schools and students in learning abilities to allow kids to reach their fullest academic potential. As a part of the athletic academic center himself, he is aware of how the many available resources positively affect his student -athletes' academic performance. My second and fourth interviewees are students here at UF that are provided with more than enough resources in order to be supported academically. They said although they are students just like those at poorly funded public schools, they agreed that their education opportunities are much better and more efficient than those who are not lucky enough to have the resources they do. My third and fifth interviewees are parents of students who attend UF. They emphasized their priority in making sure their children have resources in order to become successful academically and recognize the importance of encouraging more public school funding in order to set young generations up for success like they do their own kids.
WHAT: All of my interviewees believe this unmet need would be much more difficult to find a proper solution to that would completely solve the lack of funding for public schools in the US, however the effort put forth in this opportunity will make a big difference. They believe the solution to this is much more complex than that of many other opportunities, thus making it much more important to emphasize the development of solutions in order to stop from this unmet need worsening.
WHY: The underlying cause of my outsider interviewees needs' vary slightly from those who are in the boundary. Although they are indirect prototypes of this unmet need, an improvement in this opportunity could potentially result in an enhanced opportunity for each of my interviewees and society in the U.S. as a whole.
Inside the Boundary
|
Outside the Boundary
| |
Who
| -People who work at poorly funded public schools: Teachers Faculty Counselors Other staff members -Students who attend poorly funded public schools -Parents of students who attend poorly public schools | -Students in the US that have adequate resources at their public schools -Parents of students who attend adequately funded public schools -Staff would work at adequately funded public schools |
What
| -Give equal learning
opportunities to students
across the US
-Allow teachers and other
faculty to maximize their
ability to work/teach students
without limitations
| -Create organizations to help fund and raise money for poorly funded schools -Have to move towns or cities in order to be in the district of a school with adequate resources available. |
Why
| -Not enough funding dedicated to education in the US -Hard to distribute money equally throughout schools in the US | -Sets a higher educational standard for the US. -Creates more opportunities -Better education system for future generations, setting them up to be successful |

ENT3003- Assignment 8A
6 February 2020
1. Budget cuts result in insufficient funding for public schools throughout the U.S. to provide adequate resources to their students, teachers and faculty in order to provide equal learning and teaching opportunities.
2. My solution to this opportunity is to create a foundation or organization dedicated to charity for public schools facing this problem in high poverty communities. This non-profit organization will set goals to raise money and collect donated resources that schools can use in their learning processes. It will allow people throughout the United States to donate any computers, or learning related technology or resources which will then be dispersed to schools in need. It will also hold and create fundraising events throughout the United States in order to raise money for schools to dedicate these funds towards improving their educational system and style.
7A- Testing the Hypothesis- Part 1

Professor Pryor
ENT3003- Assignment 7A
5 February 2020
1. Budget cuts in the education Department affect public schools and the availability of resources to students in the US.
2. The opportunity I have identified is the need for public school funding in order to make sure there are adequate resources of technology used for efficient learning, enough teachers and staff, and other factors in order to allow public schools and their students to reach their maximum learning potential.
Who: Public Schools and Students of the United States
What: Many public schools throughout the US have insufficient funds in order to provide adequate learning opportunities for their students.
Why: Budget cuts and a lack of tax payer money dedicated to funding public education.
3.
Testing the Who: Teachers, other faculty and staff members are others who also share this need alongside students.
Testing the What: Not all public schools have this need, but this need specifically pertains to the public schools in poor communities of the US and with inadequate education funding.
Testing the Why: There are numerous different potential reasons a public school in the US may have a lack of funding in order to provide adequate resources to their students and staff. Although government funding and property tax payers contribute a large role in the funding for this problem, some other factors may simply root from the community itself, and the high poverty factors that may influence the public schools' resources in that specific community. These pertain to the social factors that also influence this problem.
4. Interviews:
A. Eleanor Hatton-
Eleanor is a UF student athlete from England, and once she got familiar with Gainesville and it as a community, she said one of the first things she noticed is how run down the public elementary, middle, and high schools look compared to England. This is a perfect representation of an outside look into the obvious insufficient funds given to public schools in our own community. Eleanor believes this is a major problem even seeing it in her own community especially because children and younger generations are our future, so it is important we give them enough resources to be inspired to reach their full potential and to encourage the importance and power of education for the better of not only their futures, but for the US as a whole. She believes there is not enough light shed on this problem and that it is important for the US to implement a new and more efficient way of funding public schools, making it one of their top priorities because she knows that it is such a widespread problem throughout the US especially in comparison to England.
B. Kirschtine Balbuena-
Kirschtine grew up in Gainesville, FL where there is obvious insufficient funding for the elementary, middle, and high schools. Going through these schools she could not stress enough how hard it was for her to simply get time on one of the school computers throughout her childhood because there were so few and they were always occupied by other students. She believes there is a much more efficient way of learning and emphasized the impact it potentially had on her own education as a child and teenager. She said it definitely took a tole on the teachers and their teaching style because they had to revolve their style around the lack of resources available in the class. She definitely believes this problem roots from the financial struggle throughout her community and has been able to first handedly see the effects it has on the education system.
C. Ryan Riccatelli-
Mr. Ricatelli is a family friend of mine that teaches at my high school, Carlsbad High School. He is really involved with ASB, so he is very in touch with the financial piece that runs through the schools resources. Luckily, I was fortunate enough to go to a high school with plenty of resources for both the students and teachers, however Mr. Ricatelli has also taught at schools in high poverty communities and says there is a "day and night" difference in learning opportunities between the two. As a teacher, Mr. Ricatelli showed me how difficult it is to teach with inadequate resources. For example, in his classes at Carlsbad High School, advanced technology is readily available at all times with a projector in each classroom and Apple Mac computers. He says he implements the use of these resources in his everyday lessons, but at other less fortunate schools, he didn't have these same resources so he would have to try and explain verbally rather than being able to have visuals to aid the learning process. He says that because of this and knowing that many students are visual learners, he saw those particular people struggle more in class ad first handedly was able to see how something like this affected students' ability to learn. He encourages for public schools to host fundraising events throughout a community in order to maximize the amount of funding possible when government funding and property taxes do not meet the necessary standards.
D. Dave Novosedliak-
I interviewed my dad to get the perspective of a parent and their view on insufficient funding for public schools throughout the US. In San Diego, the public schools are very competitive, so it is commonly found that families will move to a certain area simply so that their kids can attend that school for the resources it has and the opportunity it holds. My dad said that early education is crucial when striving for a successful career, so it's a shame that some students don't even have the opportunities to maximize their learning capabilities especially because this is due to uncontrollable factors. My dad believes this would be a difficult problem to solve, but it is important our society continues to fight for an improved education system in order to even out the learning opportunities throughout the US. He thinks this problem roots from insufficient funding.
E. Celi Guzman-
Celi Guzman is one of my teammates on the UF swim team. She is Puerto Rican and often visits for swim meets or family. She has seen both education systems in Puerto Rico and the US, and definitely says its much better in the US, although many schools in America are much more crowded and populated with students than in Puerto Rico. She thinks it's very important for students to be able to be provided with adequate resources in order to learn material necessary for life lessons. She believes it goes much farther than the academic side, but also sets students up socially as well. Young children are finding themselves at this time and in the process it's important for them to feel comfortable and confident in themselves, and the learning part of that plays a huge role. Between the US and Puerto Rico, she definitely believes this problem roots from insufficient government funds dedicated to public education and hopes to see a change in the future.
5. These interviews and this opportunity really opened by eyes to how important it is for our communities to push for a better and more efficient education system through financials. Something as important as education should not be such a widespread problem throughout the US and even globally. I am now able to see the perspectives of many different types of people in order to give me a better understanding of the capacity of this problem and the passion behind trying to find a solution. After these interviews, I know a lot more about this opportunity, especially that teachers are especially affected by this problem, not only students. This opportunity affects everyone, not just students, or teachers, but it is a much more widespread problem that parents, students, teachers, and so forth face.

6A- Identifying Opportunities in Economic and Regulatory Trends
Kalie Novosedliak
Professor Pryor
ENT3003- Assignment 6A
5 February 2020
Economic Trends:
1. "Japan's Economic Growth Falls Sharply as Exports Slow"
A. https://www.nytimes.com/2019/11/13/business/japan-economy.html
B. I believe there is opportunity here because Japan's economic growth has dramatically decreased due to a decreased Japanese dollar, lowering exports, and and slower consumption. This is mostly a result of the trade war between China and U.S., because the demand for Chinese exports(made with Japanese machinery) has decreased, ultimately creating for slow global growth and having a particular harsh effect on Japan's economy.
C. I believe the prototypical customer in this opportunity are employees of large Japanese businesses/firms. With a decrease in demand for specific goods and serviced produced by these workers, they first handedly experience possible drawbacks in income or availability of work.
D. I believe this opportunity is relatively difficult to exploit because it is a result of other uncontrollable economic factors. As the third largest economy in the world, Japanese exports hold a strong influence on their economy, government, and citizens, so a recession like this is difficult to exploit.
E. I saw this opportunity because I realized how it can affect Japanese companies and their employees who greatly depend on their jobs. This opportunity has a large potential to affect the lives of many Japanese people and families, so I feel it's important to look closer at this opportunity and if there is a potential solution to prevent it from growing.
2. "GDP: U.S. economy grew 2.3 percent in 2019, the slowest of Trump's presidency"
A. https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/2020/01/30/us-economy-grew-23-percent-2019-slowest-trumps-presidency-held-back-by-trade-fears-global-slowdown/
B. I believe there is opportunity here because it examines Trump's influential decisions on the growth of the U.S. economy. An example of this would be the trade war between the US and China and the potential effects it had on US economic growth. It also predicts the potential future US economic trends, so I see opportunity in how to make sure the US economy is growing at an increasing rate, to reach Trump's promise of 3%.
C. I believe the prototypical customers in this opportunity are US global companies/firms and people who work in the US, especially those who work to make globalized goods and services. The growth of the economy has a direct effect on these companies and how successful they are.
D. I believe this opportunity is relatively difficult to exploit because it is on such a large global scale. There are a lot of varying factors that play a role in the decision making process in regards to the US economy and how it affects other countries' economies as well.
E. I saw this opportunity because it is important to keep an economy growing and reflect on the growth rate and why it may or may not be growing as much as Trump promised in order to attempt to improve going forward.
Regulatory Changes:
1. "'Getting Worse, Not Better': Illegal Pot Market Booming In California Despite Legalization"
A. https://www.nytimes.com/2019/04/27/us/marijuana-california-legalization.html
B. I believe there is opportunity here because law enforcement officials are constantly finding illegal marijuana farms and are searching for a solution to prevent from this problem worsening. Although marijuana has been legalized in California, Gavin Newson, the governor or California, believes the issue of illegal marijuana is worsening rather than improving.
C. I believe the prototypical customer of this opportunity are these illicit marijuana consumers. Because so much marijuana is produced by uncertified or licensed farms, it is dangerous to consume unregulated marijuana.
D. I believe this is a relatively difficult opportunity to exploit simply because law enforcement officials cannot control so many illegal marijuana farms. These exist without the concern of the law, so it would be difficult to find a way in gaining control over unregulated farms especially because there are so many in California.
E. I am from California, so I saw opportunity in this because I am curious in how exactly the illegal marijuana market effects our economy as a whole in California. I am aware that this is an issue currently being faced, but I am interested in the potential opportunity of this problem in my state.
2. "Virginia: thousands of armed protestors rally against gun control bills"
A. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2020/jan/20/virginia-gun-rally-activists-richmond
B. I believe there is opportunity here because of the disagreement on the strict laws in regards to gun control made by state Democrats. Many gun rights activists are upset with these new laws, and democratic politicians throughout the US are trying to impose harsher restrictions on gun control regardless of the opinions of gun rights activists.
C. The prototypical customers of this opportunity are those who obtain are are pursuing to obtain a gun in Virginia or the US, as gun law enforcements vary throughout the country however have become increasingly stricter with democratic influence.
D. I believe this opportunity is relatively difficult to exploit considering the fact that these new laws are very unlikely to change in gun rights activists favor. Democrats of Virginia who impose these laws on guns are confident and unwilling to change.
E. I see opportunity in this because there are so many gun rights activists who are unhappy with the increasing popularity of the democratic influence in regards to gun control and the strict laws being imposed. It is such a controversial topic in today's political climate.
