I chose my segment to target students who attend and staff who work at poorly funded public schools throughout the US, that are directly affected by the lack of adequate resources provided by the school due to financial challenges. Students who fall into this category would be anywhere in public elementary, middle or high school.
In order to find three people that would qualify for my segment to be interviewed, I went to the Gator Swim Club Practice(which is right after my swim practice) in the O'Connell Center. Here I happened to find a lot of students who attend poorly funded middle schools and high schools throughout Gainesville. Two of my interviewees are students at Gainesville High School, one a sophomore and one a senior. They both agreed that there is even a lack of resources at her school in regards to enough available computers in the classrooms or labs. In order to find a solution to this problem they told me that there is a sign up sheet in order to get in line to use the computers. In their google searches related to this problem they always are on the lookout for cheap computers or tablets that they can use in replacement of those at school, but talk with their parents and have trouble affording them. My third interviewee is a middle school student at Fort Clarke Middle School and he said his education was definitely influenced by the lack of resources at his school. He specifically said that there was a lack of paper and printing at the school, so in a lot of the lessons, his teachers were only allowed to make a couple copies of whatever needed to be printed and the class had to share. He said in order to help this problem he would try to take a picture of the paper needed for the lesson and look at it off of his phone, but often times that would lead him to be distracted and go on social media or start texting, so he wasn't completely focused.
I found that all of my interviewees had a lot in common in seeing opportunity in this unmet need that affects their education. Although they dealt with different problems, it all roots from a lack of funding and resources provided to the students and staff.
My interviewees all deal with the effects taken upon their education as a result of this poor funding. They agree that this solution of fundraising and donating would have a hug positive impact on their lives and would help their motivation to learn and work their hardest. They were all definitely aware of the need and believe we need to spread awareness throughout the US of how much this problem could affect their futures.

Kalie,
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading your market segmenting assignment. You gained great insight on your consumers through talking to students of schools that have a funding issue and I am sure that this will help you in your planning on what kinds of funding these schools may need. It is interesting to see the differences in the schooling experience that students get depending on the level of funding that their school gets. I have family members who live up north and go to public schools that are given iPad to use throughout high school for textbooks and other assignments which is very different compared to students who do not even have enough copies of handouts due to funding.
Hi Kalie!
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading your post. You conducted excellent interviews that provided you excellent information. I, similar to all your interviewees, agree that this is an unmet need and many students would benefit from it. I had access to my own computer in 6th grade and it truly helped ease my learning experience.
I believe you identified a problem that most of the country is affected by. Plans to support public schools were created many years ago and did not account for modern technology used in education. Many schools can't afford new computers and tablets to help students learn and this is magnified because technology advances at such a fast rate. This creates a huge disparity in the quality of education between different schools.
ReplyDeleteI loved how you found people in the community and outside it because this makes it a seem more than a local issue. Also, your program will definitely help with the lack of technology in schools. The stories you referenced in your post were so unreal and a bit of a reality check for me.
